BrowOS Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 30, 2026
What BrowOS is
BrowOS is a browser extension that replaces your new tab page with a desktop: windows, a Start menu, a taskbar, built-in apps, BrowStore and wallpapers. This policy explains what information BrowOS handles and where it goes.
Data stored on your computer
BrowOS saves the following only in your browser's local storage, on your own device:
- Your settings: wallpaper, theme, accent color, cursor, taskbar and other preferences.
- Images you upload yourself, such as a custom wallpaper or cursor.
- Your desktop layout, the apps you added, taskbar pins and website shortcuts you created.
- Notes and history from the built-in Notepad and Calculator.
- App information BrowStore loaded earlier, kept so app details open faster.
None of this is sent to the developer or to any server run by BrowOS. BrowOS does not have such a server.
Requests BrowOS makes to other services
To show icons and app information, BrowOS sends a few requests directly from your browser:
- Website icons (Google). Icons for some web apps and for websites you add are loaded from Google's favicon service. Google receives the address of the website whose icon is requested, along with standard connection information such as your IP address. Google's privacy policy applies.
- App information (GitHub). When you open the details of an open-source app in BrowStore, BrowOS asks GitHub's public API for that app's description, developer and license. GitHub receives that request and standard connection information. GitHub's privacy statement applies.
- Websites you add. When you add a website in BrowStore, or open the details of a web app, BrowOS may load that website's page once to read its official name, icon and description. This request is sent without your cookies.
- Update check (manual installs only). If you installed BrowOS from the download instead of a browser store, BrowOS checks browos.pages.dev about once a day to see if a newer version exists. The website receives a standard request and connection information such as your IP address. Nothing about you or your use of BrowOS is sent.
These requests never include your settings, notes, files or browsing history.
Apps and websites you open
Many BrowOS apps are websites made by other companies or developers, for example Spotify, games and any website you add yourself. When you open one, it loads from its own servers exactly as it would in a normal browser tab, and its own privacy policy applies. BrowOS does not read, change or collect what you do inside these apps.
The built-in Notepad can play ambient sounds; these are streamed from notepad.js.org when you use them.
Searches
When you search with the BrowOS Browser app, the search opens in a new tab with the search engine you chose (Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing or Brave). That search engine receives your search, and its own privacy policy applies. BrowOS does not save your searches.
Permissions
- New tab page: BrowOS replaces your new tab page with the BrowOS desktop.
- System memory: the Task Manager shows your computer's total, used and available memory. This information is only displayed on your screen. It is not saved or sent anywhere.
What BrowOS never does
- No accounts, sign-ups or payments.
- No analytics, tracking or advertising.
- No selling or sharing of personal data.
- No reading of your browsing history or of the websites you visit outside BrowOS.
Deleting your data
- Remove an app, shortcut or website from BrowOS at any time.
- Use Delete app data in BrowStore to erase Notepad or Calculator data.
- Use Reset settings in Settings to restore the default settings.
- Uninstalling BrowOS deletes everything it stored in your browser.
Children
BrowOS does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If BrowOS changes what data it handles, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change.
